The image: Death Valley is an incredible geologic
classroom, which happens to be extremely beautiful. On my visit in
February of 2005, California was experiencing a very wet winter. While I
had pre-conceived ideas of photographing Death Valley in harsh sunlight, I was
treated to a great display of clouds and atmospheric phenomena that by my
guesswork is fairly rare in this national treasure. This view is from one
of the great lookouts at Death Valley-Aguereberry Point. We watched the
atmospheric phenomena below us change from moment to moment. I immediately
envisioned a black and white photograph when this short-lived clouded valley
presented itself. The sun is still illuminating the distant mountains
while the valley is in deep shadow. The clouds are creeping over the low
ridge in the upper left to give one a sense of movement in the photograph.
I hope you enjoy the image.
