Venus Transit of June
8, 2004
|

An extraordinary event in an extraordinary
presentation. The Venus transit is a very rare event. It is an
event that happens twice a century, Venus glided across the face of the
Sun on the morning of June 8 for those of us on the east coast of the
U.S.A. Venus can be seen in this unfiltered exposure as the black
dot just below the midline and in the lower right quadrant of the Sun
(unfortunately, web resolution does not do this image justice.) What
makes this image unique is that most images are through filtered
telescopes. I traveled to the South Carolina coast to capture the
rising Sun unfiltered and in the landscape. The image was taken at
Huntington Beach State Park near Myrtle Beach, SC. It may not look
like it, but this image was taken with a 600mm focal length telescope with
a Pentax 6x7 camera and Fuji print film. This image will
stand the test of time with regards to uniqueness. Yes, there are many
sunrises and sunsets, but few like this one. The
view was quite fascinating and I hope this image captures the moment for you to
reflect upon until the next Venus transit in June 2012.
